Claude Frollo is a complex individual. He is mostly if not always convinced that his actions are justified because God wills it. Despite this, his actions are in a bigoted manner towards the poor and the marginalized of Paris, especially the Roma people who thrive. Frollo considers the Roma to be heathens who practice witchcraft, and assumes that they challenge the status quo in the city. In his personal life, Frollo is sexually repressed and often struggles to be open about his sexuality.Story
In The Lords of Notre Dame, Frollo serves as a protagonist, despite his actions of authoritarianism and traditionalism. He, at first, found Raoulin to be repulsive due to his eccentric outlook on life. That is until one night when he sees Raoulin engage in one of his rendezvous with Jaqueline. Disturbed, yet aroused, Frollo soon develops feelings for Raoulin: Feelings that are bisexual, which he hadn't fully felt since he was a young adult. Frollo, after experiencing post-coital dysphoria, gained the hopeful idea that he could come first in the potential relationship. Soon, Frollo would show a more friendly, affectionate, and even seductive attitude towards Raoulin. The attitude eventually resulted in Raoulin expressing his feelings for the Minister after mass one Winter afternoon. Going along with what Raoulin had to offer that evening, Frollo would have sex with him. Although he moans softly as he is a reserved man, Frollo revealed his eagerness to the Legislator while he engaged in intercourse with the latter. After sex, Frollo asked Raoulin if they could be in a relationship as well as show kinks he hasn't even tried out, let alone learn it since he was a young adult. Raoulin agreed, stating that he'd like to know what love is as he struggles with it.Frollo would soon meet Jaqueline, Raoulin's prostitute friend at the brothel. He would engage in a threeway with her and his new lover Raoulin. In the threeway, it was like any other sexual encounter with Raoulin: primal, obscene, and explicit, but with the inclusion of a woman. However, once Raoulin impregnated her, he left her for Frollo. Soon, Frollo learned more about his kinks and how to be familiar with them, as well as more of his sexuality.
Yet, in order for Frollo to be together with Raoulin for the rest of his life till death do they part, he had to work with the Church. Adelphopoiesis is a ritual that Frollo has heard of, and that was the act of two men being united in spiritual fraternity which was recognized by the Church. Ten years later, along with Raoulin's wedding to Jaqueline, Frollo would perform the ritual so he and Raoulin could be together for life. Things would change when one Feast of Fools would occur. Esmeralda would come to Frollo's life, which drives him into a lustful obsession. Raoulin would reassure him that she will be Frollo's personal mistress that she could be shared. Frollo would set out on a search which arson was also committed. Eventually, Frollo would capture Esmeralda and sentence her to burned at the stake, but not before asking her to be her mistress. Quasimodo rescued Esmeralda, however, and Frollo would declare to seize Notre Dame. His plans were almost a success, but he would be confronted by Quasimodo before plunging into his fiery death below. His soul would reside in Hell and would occasionally visit Earth.
